Rare. Unmistakably Crafted

This is a working museum piece. A 1941 Waring & Gillow bookcase—the maker whose name alone speaks to a particular standard of British furniture design—complete with its original maker’s label still intact. Eighty-five years later, it hasn’t lost a beat.

The Makers

Waring & Gillow built their reputation on meticulous joinery and honest materials. Founded in the 19th century, by 1941 they were producing furniture that was meant to last generations. This bookcase is proof they delivered on that promise. Every joint, every shelf, every decision speaks to craftspeople who understood their work would outlive them.

Why This Particular Piece

The shelves are cedar—a choice made for a reason. Cedar resists warping; it ages gracefully; it smells like quality. The joints are hand-cut dovetails, visible if you look, the kind of construction detail most manufacturers stopped bothering with decades ago. The top is ebonised, that rich dark finish that deepens with time.

The patina is authentic. Not restored, not refinished. Just lived with, cared for, and aged to that particular burnish that only time delivers.

The Practicality

Fully adjustable shelves mean this bookcase works for your collection, not the other way around. At 128 cm wide and 122 cm high, with 21 cm depth, it commands a wall without overwhelming a room. It’s generous without being architectural. The rare size that actually fits real homes.

Only One Available

Finding a Waring & Gillow piece in original condition with the maker’s label is increasingly difficult. Finding one at this size, in this state, with working adjustable shelves—stop looking. This is it.

For collectors of British furniture, serious readers, and anyone who understands that the best pieces aren’t just storage. They’re inheritance.

A vintage bookcase as it is still under 100 years old!

UK and worldwide delivery

UK mainland delivery is a flat £40 per order, regardless of item size, including multiple items delivered to the same address.

Worldwide shipping is available by quotation.
